Dear Parent / Guardian:

On behalf of the Florida Department of Education, this notification is required as part of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). The NCLB Act requires school districts that are in Corrective Action to notify parents of strategies that are being implemented to improve student achievement. The school district is measured each year in reading, writing, and mathematics to determine if it has met all state student achievement criteria, or Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). AYP measures the performance of all students and specific student groups based on race / ethnicity, free and reduced price lunch status, disability, and English proficiency. To make AYP, a certain percentage of students in each group must score at grade level or be proficient on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. If one student group is not proficient, the entire school district does not meet AYP requirements.

The Hillsborough County Public School District implements the Continuous Improvement Model which helps each school analyze data and student needs, provide instruction aligned with the Sunshine State Standards, administer timely formative assessments, and provide necessary re-teaching or enrichment. The school district also develops a plan each year focused on improving the achievement of our schools. The District Improvement, Assistance, and Intervention Plan can be access on the Florida Department of Education's website at: http:www.flbsi.org/0910_SIP/Login.aspx.

As a parent, you play an important role in your child's education. A few ways you may get involved in your child's school are listed below:

  • Attend parent conferences with your child's teacher.
  • Participate in activities at the school.
  • Become a member of the School Advisory Council.
  • Volunteer at your child's school.

If you have questions regarding the academic progress of your child's school, our district, or how you can become more involved, we encourage you to contact your child's school principal.

 Sincerely,

MaryEllen Elia

Superintendent
